I am the neurotic dog owner of two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Fill in the blank: ________ always brings out the best in me. The ocean Anything else we should know? I was raised in Northern Virginia, outside of Washington DC. I lived in the Virginia Beach area for the last six years and just moved to Phoenix this month. So far, I like Phoenix very much and look forward to exploring the area when things cool off a bit. In the summer heat, I find myself eating my way through all of the fantastic restaurants. I have a son, Gavin, 14, who is a high school freshman this year. I like to horseback ride, ski, & travel. Pat Vaughn, Registrar
What are some of your key responsibilities in your new role? I'm responsible for the student files; chiefly for updating them, controlling access from a security standpoint, and cutting down on the work that teachers and other professionals have to do to maintain them by doing so myself.
I've been with the FBC for 6 years, all but one month of that in the Media Center as a Media Technician - Clerical. I answered an ad in the paper, as I was new to the area and needed a job after deciding to end my career in the on-air radio business. I liked the duties of the Media Center job but more than that I liked the idea of working at a place where my time and effort goes toward helping the community, not helping some corporation turn a profit. What is your educational/professional background? I have a BS in Electronic Media from Northern Arizona University and spent a couple of years in the radio business as an on-air DJ/announcer and reporter. But I soon discovered that industry wasn't for me; while some people are energized by either the fame or the journalistic ideals that come with the job, I found that both were draining to me. My personality is more geared toward behind-the-scenes work than anything flashy. What excites you about your new position? The chance to help all these great people at the FBC out by making their lives easier when it comes to paperwork and files. They're busy enough as it is! What is it about the FBC that most inspires you? The people, hands down. These people are so dedicated and so giving that it's easy to come to work every day and give my best effort. They're also very easy to get along with. What’s the thing you most look forward to addressing on your current “To Do” list? Indirectly, the looks on the faces of the staff whose lives I'll be making easier by taking part of their workload away from them. What is the best book you’ve read and/or movie you’ve seen in the past year? I really enjoyed the movie "Little Miss Sunshine" - the quirky, imperfect characters were very real, and the affection they shared for each other was all the more genuine and touching for it. What is something you’d like to share that most people at the FBC would be surprised to learn about you? Many people are surprised to hear that I was once a radio DJ, and would be surprised to know that I've sung karaoke on many occasions. I do like the spotlight every now and then. I'm actually fairly comfortable speaking to large groups. Fill in the blank: ___________ always bring out the best in me. "Good people" Anything else we should know? Lots of people probably already know about the novel I wrote that was published last year ("The Cure for the Curse", a paranormal thriller available from Amazon.com among other places) but I'll mention it anyway. Anybody can buy a copy from me for the special Foundation price of $10 - and it'll be signed by the author! I'm nearly finished with the sequel and will be shopping it around for literary agents in the coming months. Writing is my passion, and I'll be cranking out these books for the rest of my life. Hopefully I can keep finding places that will publish them for me. Dana Beyers, Director of Grants and Research
What are some of your key responsibilities in your new role? I am responsible for bring grant revenue into the FBC. I also provide donor/corporate research as well as development education to the FBC's Development Department and the agency's Chief Executive Officer. What is your educational/professional background? I am currently working toward a degree in Political Science. From 2000 to 2003, I served as Research Coordinator for the St. Joseph's and Barrow Neurological Foundations. In 2003, I became a Development Associate for Central Arizona Shelter Services, and in 2005, I becacme Grant Writer for the Foundation. What excites you about your new position? The fact that I get to help teachers through funding opportunities which ultimately benefit the children and adults we serve. What is it about the Foundation that most inspires you? Although I haven't been here as long as most, what inspires meis watching the teachers and their passion for the kids. They go through so much personally to serve our children and families and it is very apparent in how they speak and when they discuss what they do. It's there when they do a presentation, tell me what they need, and describe their programs. One cannot help but to be continuously inspired by what they do. What’s the thing you most look forward to addressing on your current “To Do” list? I actually have four "#1's" on my "To Do" list:
What is the best book you’ve read and/or movie you’ve seen in the past year? The best book: "Destined To Witness: Growing up Black In Nazi Germany" by Hans J. Massaquoi The best movie: The Bourne Ultimatum What is something you’d like to share that most people at the FBC would be surprised to learn about you? That my goal in life is to own a 1969 Shelby GT 500 Convertible Ford Mustang and drive it from Chicago to Los Angeles on old Route 66. I'll even settle for a 500 KR model! The book revitalizes imaginations in both young and old. What is something you’d like to share that most people at the FBC would be surprised to learn about you? I am an exercise fanatic. Fill in the blank: _______always brings out the best in me. Running by Rich Kenney 9-4-07 |
