Teacher of the Visually Impaired/Assistive Technology Instructor
12-month, Full-time
Salary Range: $34,000 - $60,000, DoE
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs assessments to identify the appropriate assistive technology to be used by visually impaired students.
- Delivers, installs and configures information systems to be used by visually impaired students
- Provides instruction in the use of general and assistive technology products to students, teachers of the visually impaired and others.
- Provides instruction in career exploration in the school setting
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs functional vision assessments.
- Provides direct service in the FBC facilities and public/private school settings. This service may include: Braille instruction, training in use of low vision aids, handwriting, concept development, keyboarding, vision/sensory stimulation, training in use of vision, abacus instruction and slate and stylus instruction.
- Consults with classroom teachers on ways to facilitate integration into the classroom for the child who is visually impaired.
- Adapts classroom materials into Braille or large print.
- Assists in the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEP’s) and 3rd year evaluations; attends and conducts IEP meetings.
- Refers families and school districts to appropriate agencies for appropriate educational materials, recreational materials and activities, and support services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred), in education of the visually impaired. Must be able to be certified in the State of Arizona as a Teacher of Children with Visual Impairments (TVI).
- Knowledge of and ability to provide instruction in the use of a wide range of general and assistive technology products commonly used by visually impaired students
- Knowledge of Braille, vision assessment instruments and procedures, low vision aids, the impact of various eye conditions and the impact of multi-handicapping conditions on learning.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Ability to establish rapport with children, adults, families, and school district/RSA personnel.
- Helpful to be bilingual in Spanish.
