15th Annual Summer Reading Contest 2008
Purpose of Contest
The purpose of our Summer Reading Contest is to encourage blind and visually impaired students to read. Good readers can have confidence in themselves and in their abilities to learn and adjust to new situations throughout their lifetimes. Good literacy skills usually are a prerequisite for employment and success in life. We hope this contest helps our students realize that reading is fun and rewarding.
Contest Categories
We will have the following grade level categories: PS-K, 1-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Register in the grade level the student will be attending in the 2008/09 school year. A student competes in one of these grade levels. Also specify the preferred reading medium: braille or large print (which includes all sizes of print). Pre-readers and Non-readers are also encouraged to participate by reporting pages read to them including their relationship with the reader, e.g. mother, father, caretaker, etc.
Contest Rules
To sign up for the contest, the entry form printed on the back of this page may be used. Log sheets reporting pages read are provided by the FBC Library upon request or can be downloaded from our website. When turned in at the end of the contest, log sheets should contain the student’s and/or a parent’s or guardian’s signature as well as titles, authors of books or magazines read, and a per-book and total page count. Parents/guardians are asked to monitor their child’s log sheet entries between June 1 and August 31, 2008. The contest may be entered any time after June 1. All log sheets must be received by the Media Center no later than September 4, 2008.
Participants in the PS-K grade level report the pages read in the pre-reader category. Non-readers register in the Non-reader category, also marking their respective grade level. They, too, count pages read to them by parents or others. All other contestants can only count pages they read themselves, in either the braille or print (regular or large print) division. Books on tape or audio books cannot be counted.
Books can be borrowed from the Foundation’s Library or any other source. Textbooks may be counted as long as they are not currently used in the contestant’s regular class work. Title pages, tables of contents, etc. can all be counted. If a book is not finished, the pages read can still be counted.
Winners will be chosen based on the number of pages read. The student who reads the largest number of pages within his/her grade level and reading medium will be a winner. There will be multiple winners based on grade level and reading media.
Prizes
Each participant who turns in his reading log will receive a certificate as well as a small gift for participation. Winners will be given a more substantial prize.
