Infant Program - Building a foundation of learning upon which to grow

The first 3 years of a child’s life are a time when much learning and development takes place.  For the child with a visual impairment, it is important that early identification, treatment, and educational intervention begin immediately because of their unique learning needs.

It is well reported that 80-90% of what children learn before the age of 5 is incidental through the use of the visual system by way of observation and imitation.  Vision is the sense that allows us to integrate all of the things we learn about the world. When vision is impaired, the child must learn to "see" and understand the world in new ways. We assist families in helping their child develop all senses by encouraging touching, listening, smelling, looking, and moving through the environment to build a foundation for future learning and participation in family life.

Infant Program’s focus is to provide informational, instructional and emotional support to help families understand ways to create opportunities for learning at this critical age and throughout the life of their child, despite limited visual ability.

Infant Program has a complete staff to meet all families needs, including service coordinators, developmental specialists, teachers of students with visual impairments, orientation and mobility specialists, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, and social workers to provide additional resources as needed.

All services are provided through the Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP) and their participating agencies, the Division for Developmental Disabilities (DDD) and the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB).
