Assessments
Technology Center Home | Assistive Technology Q&A | Demonstrations ASSESSMENTSWHAT IS AN ASSESSMENT?An assessment is a method used to identify the technology or group of technologies that will best enable a blind or visually impaired person to access information and computer systems. It is a more formal and in depth process than a demonstration. A vocational rehabilitation agency, school, or employer normally requests it. After the assessment is completed, an official report outlining the findings and recommendations is provided to the individual or organization requesting the assessment. WHAT IS INVOLVED?The assessment is a meeting in the Technology Center, between the individual needing assistive technology and the Technology Center staff. Family and friends are also welcome to sit in on the meeting. The process will begin with a discussion of the person's vision condition, the types of information difficult to access, and goals for the future. Then, based on the answers to those questions, the person is given an opportunity to sample products and technologies that fit their specific situation. We will continue sampling products until we find the most beneficial combination. If a skills assessment is also desired, we will administer any number of skill evaluations necessary to determine the skill level in the desired areas. This process seldom takes more than a couple of hours. If the person is working or going to school, a job/education site analysis should be done as a follow-up to ensure compatibility between the assistive technology identified and the computer system at work or school. WHAT IS THE COST?The corporate and educational rate is $85.00 per hour. Private individuals do not normally request a formal assessment. However, when it is requested, the assessment is provided for a fee based on a sliding scale, derived from household income. Contact us for more information. © 2002.
