CLOSE CIRCUIT TV (CCTV) MAGNIFICATION SYSTEMS

WHAT IS A CCTV?

In simple terms, a CCTV is a video camera connected to a monitor or television. The camera is equipped with a lens and zoom feature, which allows the user to magnify anything placed in the cameraÕs view. Each brand has its own range of magnification, but over all, the range is two to sixty-four times. Most manufacturers produce black and white units, foreground/background color selectable units and full color units.

TYPES OF CCTVS

  • Hand-held with built-in monitor, (fits in your pocket)
  • hand-held camera connected to a monitor or TV
  • self-contained portables
  • stand-alone units
  • camera units which share a computer's monitor

WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE

A CCTV magnification system is used to magnify print and/or images from hard copy on to its tv screen or monitor. This enables an individual with limited vision to see images and read text which is, otherwise, difficult or impossible to see. It allows a child to work to his/her full potential in school and to do homework independently just as his/her peers. A CCTV allows an adult to view photos, manage personal finances, read personal information and correspondence, etc. Children and adults use the CCTV for recreational reading and hobbies such as Stamp collecting, Coin collecting, trading cards, needlepoint etc. Thus it is an excellent tool for maintaining or regaining independence.

FOR WHOM IS A CCTV APPROPRIATE?

Though a CCTV wonÕt benefit everyone with limited vision, it is generally a very powerful tool for those who can read large print such as a newspaper article title or headline, large print text books and magazines, large fonts on a computer, large print in magazine and television adds, or those who can efectively read print that is about two inches in hight. If youÕre not able to read text such as that given in these examples, please donÕt assume you cannot use a CCTV. The best way to know if a CCTV will benefit you is to come and let us demonstrate them for you or have an assessment done. you should also consider having a low vision examination done by a low vision specialist.
