PRINT SCANNING AND READING TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS PRINT SCANNING AND READING TECHNOLOGY?

Print scanning and reading technology is made up of two parts, print scanning software and a optical scanner. this technology is referred to as "Optical Character Recognition" or "OCR." OCR software is a program that takes a picture of text on a print page, converts it to computer text, and displays it on the computer screen. It does so via the optical scanner. Some OCR packages now come with a software synthesizer included at no additional charge and read the document to the user audibly. Those that have built-in auditory capabilities also have built-in document magnification. These OCR packages range in price from $495.00 to $1095 depending on brand and if audible text reading is built in. Scanners which are acceptable range in price from $300.00 to $500.00.

Another class of OCR package is the stand-alone unit, sometimes called a reading machine." This is a self-contained unit consisting of one or two pieces requiring no personal computer (PC). The main unit contains the data processing , data storage, and speech output components. In some cases, this central unit will also house the optical scanner. Other units will have the scanner connected via cable. Finally, there will be a key-pad or keyboard from which the user controls the machine. Normally, there is no visual display. However, some manufacturers provide a port to which a monitor can be connected.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS TECHNOLOGY?

This technology allows a blind/visually impaired or learning disabled individual to access hard-copy print information through auditory means. Thus, a blind/visually impaired or learning disabled person using this technology could read books, newspapers, magazines, business and personal correspondence, etc. Being able to read is important to those who enjoy recreational reading, and to those who want to maintain or regain independence in their personal life. It is crucial to success in school and in the work place. Thus, this technology is vital.

FOR WHOM IS THIS TECHNOLOGY APPROPRIATE?

Simply stated, OCR technology is appropriate for those who cannot read standard or magnified print. It is also helpful to those who use magnification but have difficulty using it alone or for prolonged periods. Finally, OCR technology is helpful to persons with learning disabilities who have difficulty comprehending information when they read visually.
