SCREEN READING TECHNOLOGY

What is SCREEN READING TECHNOLOGY?

Screen reading technology is made up of two parts, screen reading software and a speech synthesizer. Screen reading software is a program that reads the information displayed on the computer screen audibly. It does so by passing the information to a speech synthesizer. The synthesizer can be another software program that uses the computer's sound card and speakers, or a hardware device connected to or installed in the computer. Most screen reading packages now come with a software synthesizer included at no additional charge. These software packages range in price from $595.00 to $1,195 depending on brand and supported operating system. Synthesizers range in price from $150.00 to $1,195.00.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS TECHNOLOGY?

This technology allows a blind/visually impaired or learning disabled individual to access information from the computer screen through auditory means. Thus, a blind/visually impaired or learning disabled person using this technology could read this or most any other web page, an e-mail message, word processor document, spread sheet, database, etc. Since being successful in school or work is so dependant on using a computer, this technology is vital. Even at home, access to a computer and the Internet is so important. This technology provides that access.

FOR WHOM IS THIS TECHNOLOGY APPROPRIATE?

Simply stated, screen reading technology is appropriate for those who cannot read the screen in a standard or magnified view. It is also helpful to those who use screen magnification but have some difficulty using it alone. Finally, screen reading technology is helpful to persons with learning disabilities who have difficulty comprehending information when they read visually.
